Abstract

This article analyzes a circular economy education initiative in high schools and universities in Douala, through the adoption of ecological charcoal produced from organic waste. How do the eco-charcoal sector and the educational architecture of the initiative structure a circular economy and energy transition education system in Douala? What are the effects of the system on learner participation and educational outcomes, particularly in terms of perceived knowledge, adoption intentions, and career choices in green jobs? This contribution aims to assess how the eco-charcoal initiative structures a circular economy and energy transition education system in Douala, and to measure its effects on learner participation and educational outcomes. The pilot project combines hands-on workshops and awareness sessions led by Kemmit Ecology and Mboundja Green Technology. Participants develop knowledge and skills related to recycling organic waste into eco-friendly charcoal and the challenges of transitioning to cleaner, more environmentally friendly energy sources. Results show that between 2017 and 2023, 15,500 students were made aware of the socio-economic and environmental dimensions of this energy alternative. Beyond its educational impact, the initiative promotes a local solution that contributes to the fight against deforestation and highlights the central role of schools in disseminating circular economy practices in Douala.
