“Inhabiting the educational:” Disability, capability, and the creation of anthropo-ethically sustainable worlds

Abstract

The capability approach is an important and emergent theoretical framework about “human well-being”—what people are able to do and to be, the kind of life they are effectively able to lead. The approach has been developed in a variety of theories: social justice, social sciences and educational sciences too. When we talk of capability in the field of education, it is clear we are still in the very early stages of the developments. Recently, this new paradigm has mostly been used in the so-called “human development approach”.
The economist-philosopher Amartya Sen and philosopher Martha
Nussbaum are the pioneers who have significantly developed it.
