The application of capability approach to inter-generational learning
Abstract
This paper is the result of a comparative analysis of selected theories and authors. The analysis takes place through a historical and anthropological lens encompassing different civilizations and historical epochs, with a view to come up with pedagogical reflections on the elderly and on the perception of old age in the Western world. For the reconstruction of a relationship between different generations based on inter-generational learning, capable of linking yesterday’s world with the current one, as well as to today’s challenges, such reflections are revisited in the light of the capability perspective. In accordance with Martha C. Nussbaum’s views, this perspective is intended to be the most suitable indicator on the basis of which it is possible to assess quality of life.
It is also a necessary condition of the process aimed to enable the development of one’s own potential and abilities—in a society that allows for their use in a context inspired by the values of emancipation in all stages of life.
