Abstract

This paper presents preliminary results from a research about a group of at
risk and drop out students re-engaged in VET schools of Veneto, a region of
Italy. From theoretical framework of Capability Approach we claim that inclusion
and success in education are related to the development and expression
of agency. Although partial, the data collected highlight a vulnerability
of agency of these young people. Furthermore the data show the presence
of economic and socio-cultural variables that indicate a high risk of social
marginalization, VET cannot be considered the umbrella solution for
early school leaving. Tackling ESL should take greater account of factors that
may affect the agency of young people. More evidence of research can help
the debate in this field and address educational policies.
