Abstract

Teachers’attitudes towards inclusive processes play a crucial role in creating educational contexts that meet students’ needs and foster their academic success. In this regard, the Scale of Teachers’ Attitudes and Beliefs towards Inclusive Processes (SACI) constitutes a useful tool to assess teachers’ beliefs, misconceptions and attitudes, based on the system of values proposed in the Inclusive Teacher Profile (EASNIE 2012).

This paper presents the validation procedure of the SACI scale, which was administered to an extensive sample of 1334 teachers enrolled in courses for special needs education. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the good psychometric properties and supported the five-factor model consistent with the tripartite conceptualization of attitudes (cognitive, emotional, and behavioral). Specifically, the model comprises positive beliefs, misconceptions, educational and teaching practices, perceived discomfort about practices, and perceived discomfort about the role.

Systematically assessing teachers’ attitudes towards inclusive processes by evaluation tools such as the SACI can reflective practice on one’s own teaching actions. It also provides a foundation for developing and evaluating training programs aimed at strengthening awareness and effectiveness of inclusive practices.
