This study focuses on the effect of an intensified physical education program on the attentional function of middle school students. Based on previous research, the investigation aims to assess whether increased hours of physical education, with a focus on cognitive and team activities, can positively influence students' executive functions.
Four classes in a Milan middle school were involved: two followed a standard program of 2 hours per week of physical education, while the other two followed 4 hours per week with a more team-play and cognitive-skills oriented approach. Results show that the group with greater involvement in physical activity experienced improved in speed and accuracy of attention compared with the control group. This suggests that an integrated approach to physical education, including cognitive and strategic challenges, can improve students' executive functions.
These results are of interest for the design of educational content aimed at improving academic performance through physical activity. They also highlight the importance of considering physical activity as an integral part of the educational experience, rather than relegating it to a mere physical outlet such that the discipline can contribute significantly to students' cognitive development and learning.
