Abstract

The article proposes a critical analysis of the psychometric properties of TECO test, developed to assess the general competences acquired by graduates in Italian universities. Then we focus on the cautions that should be observed in order to build reliable tools and the risks involved in the use of unsuitable tests, especially if they aren’t developed for research purposes but as an instrument of administrative and political evaluation. The article also examines the possible impact of confidence between evaluators and evaluated on the reliability of the
assessment, and provides suggestions to bring scientific practice back to its natural
role of assistance and cooperation with educational and academic staff.
