Abstract

The educational topic of “becoming citizen” is historically rooted on the idea of “citizen” by Bodin, Rousseau and Hegel. Afterward the German pedagogist Kerschensteiner focused on the education “of man and the citizen” and on “civic virtues” and the “civic character” considered as a “moral character”. By discussing Rawlsian recent theory of justice and the notion of the person’s “moral powers”, the paper claims that the Citizen Education should be conceived as inseparable from the education of the whole person. It is indeed considered in terms of the “will education” which aims at fostering the growth of “free and equal” persons that are able to balance in an unified perspective “general” and “particular” will in their actions and experiences.
