Immigrant women and new democratic citizenship

Abstract

Within the framework of a feminization of migration at international level, women
still find several obstacles in accomplishing a real integration, and this because of a
double exclusion: on the level of gender and of economic inequality. In Italy, however, there is a growing request of citizenship by women immigrants, which is expressed in a greater educational level of the girls, in their participation in associations and in solidarity voluntary work. While, on one hand, the request of a formal citizenship is still unfulfilled – as the laws facilitating its acquisition are missing – on the other, women are developing the democratic participation and the consciousness of their rights, besides becoming more protagonists from a social and political point of view.
