The contribution examines Save the Children’s Poli Millegiorni programme, transforming early childhood
services into community hubs. Starting with a review of research and policies highlighting the preventive role
of 0–6 services in reducing inequalities, the pedagogical features of Poli Millegiorni are analysed with particular
reference to educational, social and health interventions integration. Drawing on the findings of cross-sectional
participatory evaluation of Poli Millegiorni in Moncalieri, Tivoli, Locri, San Luca, Bari and Catania, the
article gives voice to the lived experiences of families participating to the programme. The phenomenological
analysis of video-interviews and focus groups – involving 56 parents – highlights how a welcoming approach,
authentic listening and co-creation of informal networks enhance parental empowerment both at individual
and community level.
