Accessible and inclusive museums. A pedagogical glance

Abstract

A responsive museum is committed to openness to all, giving everyone chances of engagement in diverse, multisensory experiences. It organizes exhibits, communication, workshops and facilities to dialogue to each visitor through “facilitating environments”. Today, museums are becoming more and more accessible and inclusive places, who know how to go beyond the proposal of special programs for special needs: the instances of Universal Design are conceived as means to meet the needs of every person. Their aims are connected with the right of individuals to take part in the cultural life, with a conception of culture as facilitator of social inclusion and with the awareness that participation is a means of removing barriers and prejudices.
