The COVID-19 emergency has brought to light the shortcomings of our local healthcare systems. Hence, the new National Recovery and Resilience Plan guidelines, in relation to “proximity” healthcare, call for the construction of a systemic and integrated network of healthcare facilities, including “cutting-edge” amenities such as community hospitals. This model of healthcare emphasizes prevention and health promotion based on a self-educational and self-responsible attitude on the part of patients, as well as the need for healthcare professionals to competently guide patients and their families through the transition from one healthcare service to another, and thus to effectively interface with other practitioners. Community nurses will also play a crucial part. Against this backdrop, we need to urgently reflect on the potential role of the education specialist within new healthcare teams and in the professional development of healthcare practitioners.
