Quality of education and sustainable development: an alliance needed, a pedagogical mission

Abstract

The essential role of a quality education with respect to sustainable development and global citizenship is now widely recognized on an international scale. There is a growing need to identify, implement, and monitor plans, strategies, actions expressly aimed at producing positive changes, towards an increasingly cohesive, inclusive, supportive, and responsible society, capable of taking care of the environment in a lasting way. In the wake of research on the quality of education and on the intelligibility factors of educational facts, the essay presents a critical-hermeneutic reflection on educational planning in relation to the challenge of sustainability, with the aid of a pedagogical model having at its core the principle of educability.
