Abstract

The aim of this contribution is to highlight the salient aspects linked to the inequalities between women and men
in the prison context and how the androcentric vision of the system can affect the quality of prison life of prisoners
and aggravate their conditions treatment. The low rate of female crime, found both in France and in Italy, reveals
numerous causes and offers various sociological and criminological interpretations. The underrepresentation
of women thus denotes processes of overlapping conditionings, not least the severe judgment expressed by society towards prisoners, judgment still steeped in stereotypes and preconceptions that have their roots in patriarchal culture and in the increasingly subtle forms of female control and oppression, despite the various drives towards emancipation and the affirmation of rights.
