Hypertext between spaces of writing and places of reading

When writing represents a transcription of verbal language, it takes on a linear arrangement, which the structure of hypertext does not alter. Digitalisation processes have rather changed the support of writing, because the electronic one is able to reproduce thousands of texts. It has been then transformed the reading object whose novelties, hypertext included, depend above all on the functions of the medium, which are different from those of the previous writing surfaces. Hence a rethinking of the ways of reading. The following remarks arise from the findings of linguistics and particularly of sociosemiotics (Deni, 2002; Semprini, 2003; Zinna, 2004) claiming the page’s original function of score appeals to the concept of space (Farinelli, 2003, 2009). The linearity of writing, that the non-sequential structure, proper to hypertext, must in any case comply, reflects all the characteristics of the space. Instead, it can be the way of reading to transform an order from spatial to local, as demonstrated by shared reading aloud (Batini, 2022, 2023). A place has been qualified as a field of attention (Tuan, 2001), whose limits are set by the audibility of the voice. This form of reading then links the act of enunciation with that of the utterance, the text with the here and now of the context and writing with oral communication.
