The study was conducted as part of the University Research projects of the Sapienza University of Rome, with the aim of counting the number of Montessori sections active from 2013 to 2021 and estimating the number of students who, each year, complete a Montessori primary school education.
To this end, we used available doctoral research data from 2013 and 2016, and we integrated it data from 2021 (specifically reconstructed through analysis of school websites, emails and telephone interviews). The study shows a recent growth in active sections: in particular, in 2021 it reached 107 fifth grade classes and 137 first grade classes. The expansion of the phenomenon suggests the need for studies about the dissemination not only of official sections but of practices that are truly consistent with the principles of Montessori pedagogy.
