This paper aims to retrace the history of the educational profession and the training of educators, through the elucidation of ideas, theories, practices and a variety of educational roles. These
combined elements found their raison d’être and came to fruition through intersecting and becoming intertwined with the cultural, social, economic, legislative and political changes of the
second half of the twentieth century in Italy. Until the early nineties, the increase in the number of educators seems to indicate an implicit acknowledgement of their professional role, despite
the lack of a clear and unambiguous legislative and educational framework. Through a reinterpretation of some significant bibliographical references, this paper seeks to highlight the shifts
in the paradigm of thought that have shaped training practices and the evolution of the profession.
