Ortica, a comic book by Marina Girardi from Topipittori’s PiNO series of books, is a work for children that embodies several
values of eco-feminist thought. The young protagonist, Ortica, shows an eclectic and determined personality, outside the more
traditional gender canons, which she develops through a strong connection with nature. The narrative is characterised by the
protagonist’s capacity to communicate freely with all life forms, fostering a respectful connection with the environment. This
communication enables her to comprehend and appreciate the significance of biodiversity and the intricate interconnections
between living beings. The present study will build on Children’s Literature Studies, employing an eco-feminist framework and
the theoretical concept of the ‘planetary garden’ as articulated by Gilles Clément. By means of poetic language and evocative illustrations,
Ortica not only educates on ecological and inclusive thinking, but also invites readers to engage in personal and autobiographical
introspection by recounting their own experiences, thereby working towards the cultivation of profound ecological
and feminist consciousness.
