Abstract

Children are an “index” of contemporary urban discomfort and malaise. Their well-being in the city is a parameter of urban sustainability. To the extent of having a positive and visible
impact on the children-city relationship, nowadays urban planning tends to stand, more and more, beside pedagogical action, through interactive participation applied to local planning, in order to provide for the shortcomings that cities show toward children. The paper reports on two experiences of participatory planning, achieved within neighborhood laboratories for sustainable
development in Reggio Calabria, where pedagogical action has been integrated with the practice of urban planning, in order to reinforce the sense of belonging to the city in children and teenagers, while identifying problems and pointing solutions, and to increase the children’s sensitivity to environmental balance.
