Among the researches concerning Antonio Gramsci’s thought, many have focused on the role of intel-lectuals, often producing misunderstandings about their function in contemporary society. The purpose of this article is to highlight, through a philological method, the pedagogical-political function of in-tellectuals in Gramsci’s thought. To do so, an attempt has been made to delve into the passage from the writings on the Southern Question to the Quaderni, in order to emphasize, since all men are in-tellectuals for Gramsci, they do not immediately have a progressive function. In this sense, an attempt will be made to see the difference between progressive and regressive political-pedagogical function through the interrelation of these terms with the concept of autonomy.
