Towards a definition of the self-determination construct in special pedagogy. Conceptual lines and philosophical intersections
Abstract
In order to analyse the features characterizing the binomial “self-determination and disability”, the
present paper highlights the conceptualizations underling the psycho-pedagogical model of self-determination
elaborated by the Functional Model and the Causal Agency Theory. In particular, in tracing
conceptual and epistemological intersections between these theories and the analytic philosophy
(especially, Donald Davidson’s works), the author draws attention to some ethical-philosophical issues
opened up by these psycho-pedagogical theories. This confirms the crucial role played by the selfdetermination
construct within the contemporary debate on adult disability.
