Abstract

This paper aims to provide a general overview of the actors and factors involved in employment
rights in prison. It analyses some current challenges and it proposes possible scenarios. In particular,
work and vocational training are taken into consideration as fundamental elements for the
process of social inclusion that aim to promote a constructive social participation and allow the
construction or reconstruction of a network of relationships in the territory. This theme is anchored
in a pedagogical study that focuses on some strategic issues: the assumption of a holistic perspective
inspired by the life project; the functions of work in prison as a humanizing element; the commitment
to accompany people in the construction of a multiple identity.
The attempt is to offer an articulated vision, never hiding the problems and identifying possible
growth itineraries at the same time. The paper aims to highlight the work as one of these itineraries,
also showing the major critical issues related to the Italian detention system.
