Abstract

Although international documents (UN, 2006) and the principles of Universal Design (Mace, 1985) underline the right to communication, understood as freedom of expression, opinion, and access to information, this right is not always guaranteed in everyday life due to resistance, prejudice, or limited cultural awareness. This exploratory study analyses a project developed within “Cascina Oremo” in Biella, aimed at creating a unified network of services that promotes the use of communication systems such as the Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to foster social interactions and cooperation. The shared experience at CO fostered collaboration, a sense of belonging, and the professional growth of the professionals. AAC, initially conceived as a specialized support intended for a select few, has emerged as a generalizable communication approach, capable of actively involving the peer group and families. The results highlight the importance of promoting AAC as a broader and more inclusive communication tool.
