Abstract

Nowadays scientific museums include both historical institutions as Natural History museums, and modern museums as science centres. Therefore they are characterized by different missions, policy, museographical styles, communication strategies. All scientific museums are interested in public education. Visitor studies reveal that post-school young people are just a little component of museum publics. For these young people museums organize specific projects in order to build up a friendly, non-academic, informal learning environment. The paper reports about a Project for young people living in Rome suburban neighbourhoods, carried out at the Zoological Museum of Rome. In order to promote their interest towards Science and the Museum, museum educators contacted the young people in their territory,
organized some visits to the Museum, involving them in scientific activities and public cultural events.
