The article traces the profile of Leonardo Trisciuzzi, founder of Italian special education. He was the one who outlined in the special pedagogy discipline a science‐based approach. In this sense, Trisciuzzi stands as a follower of illustrious scholars of education and learning, such as Itard, Braille, Montessori. Therefore, here we simply offer three cross‐sections, presenting three broad elective fields of research, in which his interests have moved: (1) the history of special education and the historical approach to knowledge, (2) starting from his studies on childhood and childhood pedagogy, (3) the teaching‐learning processes of reading and writing and their implications with respect to specific difficulties such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and dysorthography.
