The article traces the profile of Leonardo Trisciuzzi, founder of Italian special education. He was the one who outlined in the special pedagogy discipline a science-based approach. In this sense, Trisciuzzi stands as a follower of illustrious scholars of education and learning, such as Itard, Braille, Montessori. Therefore, here we simply offer three cross-sections, presenting three broad elective fields of research, in which his interests have moved: (1) the history of special education and the historical approach to knowledge, (2) starting from his studies on childhood and childhood pedagogy, (3) the teaching-learning processes of reading and writing and their implications with respect to specific difficulties such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and dysorthography.
