From oblative motherhood to conscious motherhood
Models, images, representations, educational processes
In Western countries, especially in Italy, governments are alarmed at the high birth rate; some even fear, in apocalyptic form, that the Italian population will be wiped out in time and people will take its place from other countries and other continents.
The theme we wish to investigate is addressed to the ancient and recent meaning of motherhood, to the sacredness of its being an encounter between non-life and life, to the anthropological mystery of its being 'divine' in drawing from nothingness, from obscurity to life, to the light of a newborn.
It is no coincidence that over the centuries, from Juno Lucina to the Virgin Mary in her various representations, some religions have emphasised the value of giving birth based on the mother's womb that guards life. For centuries, girls and young women have been educated to be mothers as their first biological and social mission, almost an ancestral imprinting in defence of humanity's survival. The game of dolls, an ancient game, has always had this address of nurturing, of caring, in which today more and more the male world is also involved, from the children in the nurseries who are entrusted with a doll to look after, to the young fathers who are increasingly being trained in feeding bottles, feeding, changing nappies, and childcare. Today, motherhood is no longer only the prerogative/destiny of mothers but is also a task that transforms fatherhood, which appears sweeter, more affectionate, and more physically involved.
