Call for papers n.195 (2023)

2023-06-12

The magazine "Pampaedia," formerly known as "Bollettino As.Pe.I.," invites university professors, researchers, research fellows, PhD holders and candidates, scholars, teachers, and school administrators to submit their contributions on the theme:

Educational Poverty and Merit: What is the role of the school?

There are contagious words that quickly permeate different contexts, not because of their superior communicative power, but due to an interpretive freedom that ends up compromising their function of translating reality. Empty, vague words that generate confusion instead of serving as a means of communication.

Terms like merit or expressions like educational poverty, which are currently gaining popularity, especially when they inevitably intersect within the school system, risk falling into this category. The claim to recognize and valorize competences, which is at the heart of meritocratic logic, when confronted with socio-economic-cultural inequalities, involves factors that go beyond the scope of education and raise questions and doubts about the value, meaning, and democratic function of merit. Should the school take on this issue? Is it capable of meeting the challenge of ensuring that everyone, even those without the necessary resources, has the opportunity to develop their abilities and be evaluated based on their own merits? How can it do so?

The aim of this call is to stimulate a profound reflection, gather ideas, experiences, educational and didactic proposals, as well as initiatives open to the community, in order to clarify the concept of merit in its interaction with educational poverty, freeing it from the ambiguities that often compromise its pedagogical and moral meaning.
