Abstract

The contribution aims to briefly outline the historical and cultural path that led to the birth of the crèche as a public service for children aged 0-3 in the 1970s. Unlike other childcare services that were created with an explicit educational purpose, its creation is mostly socially motivated, as it responds to the need for a place to provide care and assistance for the children of working mothers. Progressively, it has increasingly taken on a precise educational function.
Therefore, the crèche is not only a necessary and relevant social service to enable women to work, but also a place for the overall growth of the child itself and, in particular, an opportunity to meet with peers, a fact that is certainly very important today in relation to changes in the composition of the family, within which the vital sibling relationships are disappearing.
