On Angela Nogarola and Two of Her Correspondents

Abstract

This article examines the figure of Angela Nogarola, a Veronese poet active between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, with the aim of situating her within the intellectual circles of pre-humanist Veneto. Particular attention is paid to her relationships with Mabilia da Thiene and Maddalena Scrovegni, which is marked by strong Petrarchan threads. On the philological side, the article proposes the attribution to Nogarola of several letters transmitted anonymously in ms. Modena, Biblioteca Estense Universitaria, It. 427. A final appendix provides a complete list of texts by and addressed to Angela Nogarola, with incipit, explicit, manuscript witnesses, and editions.
