Abstract

Quasimodo’s choice to translate classical texts in the period after 1938 derives from theoretical motivations and even from polemical intentions both towards the authoritarian classicism of Fascist culture and towards all forms of poetic metaphysics and mysticism. The essay attempts to reconstruct the theoretical and cultural framework within which Quasimodo’s particular relationship with the idea of the ‘classical’ developed, over and above the classical texts that he chose to translate.
