The contribution aims to reconstruct the stemmatic relationships between the manuscripts that testify to the Conlatio de generibus metrorum of the ars grammatica of Julian of Toledo: F, G, L, R and V. The metric part highlights interesting exchanges between the prototypist and derivationist doctrines contemplated and merged together by the grammarian, who has as a model the previous ars metrica of Mallius Theodore and the Servian Centimeter. The importance given to metrics by Julian makes clear the extreme accuracy in grammatical and prosodic knowledge that students in the seventh century. A.D. must acquire to allow the analysis of a poetic text under many aspects. The source of this insight is found in the cultural change that is going through Visigothic Spain, whose characteristics are based on the recovery and transmission of phonetic, morphological, prosodic and metric skills.
