There are just seventeen fragments certainly attributable to Euripides’ Aegeus. Nonetheless they are sufficient for a coherent reconstruction of plot and characters;
they also allow convincing hypotheses on how the drama reflects or anticipates some
fundamental motifs of the author’s theatre, of which it plausibly ranks among
the first dramas.
