Abstract

The article addresses the history of the text of the Ars grammatica of the bishop of Toletano Giuliano, which amounts to 11 codices, distinguishing a double drafting between branches and in which the manuscript tradition of Spanish grammar can be divided, the diffusion of which began just after the bishop’s death in 690 A.D. The Ars also stands out for the numerous quotes from pagan and Christian authors sedimented in the text as a test bed for future commentators on the Holy Scriptures. The authors of these interventions worked in a Visigothic school very close to Julian’s own, since they used the same materials and followed the same writing style as the teacher from Toledo. Therefore, the two versions derive more or less directly from Julian’s teachings.
