PARODY AND POETICS IN PROPERTIUS 1.16

Abstract

Propertius’ 1.16 is a paraclausithyron which consists of two songs; the lover’s
song towards the door, and the door’s song. The door complains for the
annoyance it receives from the lover’s complaints. In this paper I examine
the social, political and poetical dimensions of this elegy. It is proved that
the degradation of the door is actually a “vehicle” for Propertius in order to
parody the social and political circumstances of his era. Also, it is a hidden
discourse about poetics, as it symbolizes Propertius’ poetic selfconsciousness
and his obedience to the Callimachean poetic theory.
