This article examines the epigrams transmitted under the name of Plato, a group of thirty-seven texts widely regarded by modern scholars as spurious. The study shows that the corpus displays a stratified textual history, characterised by different kinds of pseudepigraphic material, each requiring a specific editorial approach. A pseudepigraphic typology identified in this study calls for close attention to the variant readings preserved in the manuscript tradition, which offers insight into previously unexplored phases in the history of the corpus. Through a study of the sources and a focus on representative examples, the analysis argues that investigating the transmission and reception of this pseudepigraphic corpus is essential not only for reconstructing its history and development, but also for defining sound editorial principles.
