Abstract

This essay offers a comprehensive discussion of Galen's use of the lexicon related to expressive obscurity. It highlights not only the ways in which this terminology is applied in his exegesis of Hippocratic texts, but also the underlying sources of influence – namely rhetorical treatises and philological-grammatical literature – with which Galen was thoroughly familiar and which deeply informed his approach. By tracing these connections, the study sheds light on how Galen integrates linguistic and rhetorical theory into his interpretive strategies, demonstrating the extent to which his medical hermeneutics were shaped by broader intellectual traditions of his time.
