This article, moving from Cicero rep. 6, 21 and Crates Mallensis fr. 29 Broggiato, enlightens the possibility that the expression Atlanticum, quod magnum, quem Oceanum can derive from Μεγάλη Θάλαττα, Ἀτλαντικὸς πέλαγος, Ὠκεανός. Τhe hypothesis is strengthened by the comparison with the denominations used for the same place along three centuries of Latin literature, where Ciceronian choice appears extraordinary and updated.
