This paper focuses on the relationship between languages and writing systems in a context of language contact, such as the Calabria at the end of 16th century, where Greek speakers and Romance ones lived alongside. Starting from reports of the first pastoral visit of Annibale D'Afflitto, archbishop of Reggio Calabria, we highlighted monks and priest's skills of both Greek and Latin alphabet and we concluded that writing and reading abilities did not imply, in that context, languages skills, as expected.
