Between 1948 and 1960, Quasimodo published several theatre reviews (sometimes of plays in which he had been directly involved). This paper examines those related to Greek drama, highlighting their structure and various aspects of interest: descriptions of places (Syracuse theatre in particular), historic and literary comments, stances on cultural issues (the civil value of theatre being vehemently stated; the criticism around “archaeological” productions, “shouted” performances and translations in verses which are far from modern sensitivity); some remarks on linguistic aspects also feature.
Finally, his translation of an epigram by Theocritus, which is engraved onto a plaque located in Syracuse (Istituto Nazionale del Dramma Antico), is presented.
